We have begun our two week study of the United States! Yes, I was a mean mom and made the kids “do school” on Labor Day :)! I was a little worried that they might complain, but we had a great day – I am so proud of both of them and how well they are adjusting to home school!
Ryan played the national anthem on our interactive globe (a really cool globe that I found on sale at Target last summer) and we said the Pledge of Allegiance. I am going to print off the words for both to make sure that the boys really learn them and what they mean for our country.
Here are the highlights from today:
Bible – Learned about MK’s (aka-missionary kids) and Ryan volunteered to pray out loud today 🙂
Geography – Labeled the US, Canada, Mexico, Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Mississippi River, Great Lakes, Gulf of Mexico, and Rocky Mountains
Science – Learned about the three types of forests (decidous, coniferous, and tropical rainforest). We also learned about the different layers (Emergent Layer, Canopy, Understory, Shrub Layer, Herb Layer, and Floor) and what types of animals live in them

Tomorrow, we are going to IHOP (the boys’ choice) to have a “Not Back To School” breakfast celebration. I have heard from other home schooling moms that it’s good to do something special on the first day of public school in case the kids feel like they are missing out on something and to also remind them of some of the benefits of home schooling – flexibility and freedom!
Verse of the Day: It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. Galations 5:1
