Review: Creating a Masterpiece

I learned about a fabulous art program called Creating a Masterpiece at the HEAV convention last month.  Children were watching the DVDs right there in the vendor hall and their artwork looked amazing – I was intrigued!

The Creating a Masterpiece vendors were so sweet and helpful and they offered me a free DVD in exchange for a review of their program.  I chose the “Tropical Clown Fish” – Lessons with Colored Pencils since we already had the supplies on hand.  All that is needed are six different colored pencils (Prismacolor brand is preferred), Bristol (or other high quality art paper) paper, and a pencil.  How simple is that?!?

One of the most amazing things about this program are that it’s like having your own private art teacher in the comfort of your own home.  You are able to pause, rewind, or even re-watch the video at your own leisure.  I also love that this is a non-consumable product…you can reuse the DVDs for all of your children!

Each art lesson is taught by Sharon Hofer, an internationally known professional artist and teacher.  She has a sweet demeanor and does a wonderful job of creating excitement about the masterpiece that you are creating!  Click here to watch a sample video.

Ryan and I just watched the DVD in the schoolroom and followed along!

The first task was outlining the shape of the clownfish…Sharon breaks it down into small steps that are simple to follow.

Then we got to start adding color!

Now it’s really looking like a fish – great job Ryan!

Creating a Masterpiece offers five different levels, each increasing in difficulty.  The levels include various mediums such as colored pencils, pastels, acrylic painting, silk painting, charcoal, copper tooling, sculpture, and more!  The individual DVDs cost $35, but are also available in complete sets for a discounted price.  Some of the more advanced DVDs would be a great way to fulfill a fine arts elective needed at a high school level.  It would only cost about $149 for a full year of art (22-26 lessons) – not bad!

I was truly impressed at how well our drawings turned out – Creating a Masterpiece will be a first choice for art curriculum in our homeschool from now on!
